Brief

Design an interactive screen for Dyson's V11, V12 and V15 vacuum cleaners which can be controlled by a single-button interface.

Client

During my tenure at Dyson in the floorcare department I worked on designing the interactive screens for the Dyson V11, V12 and V15 machines. This project, a highlight of my career, allowed me to fully immerse myself in UX/UI design, creating an intuitive and engaging user interface.

Challenges

Designing a comprehensive interface that could be controlled with just one button. Users needed to navigate through multiple functions effortlessly. We addressed this challenge by incorporating short and long presses, each triggering specific actions. Feedback mechanisms, such as countdowns during long presses, were integrated to enhance user understanding and interaction.

Project goal

Develop an interactive screen that not only informed users about the vacuum's performance but also allowed them to control various settings and empowered them to use the machines many tools and accessories. Key features included displaying power mode, battery life, dust collection metrics, error messages, and providing access to instructional videos.

Storyboarding

The design process was initiated by storyboarding. This involved sketching out various scenarios and user interactions. This step allowed us to visualize potential user journeys and identify key touchpoints within the interface.

User flow

I then mapped out the interaction flow, detailing logic behind each screen transition and user action. At this stage I engaged heavily with stakeholders from various departments e.g. electronic engineers, manufacturing, marketing. This collaborative approach facilitated brainstorming sessions and ensured alignment among teams on the interface's structure and functionality.

Usability testing

With initial designs in hand, I conducted rigorous usability testing sessions to gather feedback and validate any assumptions. Real users interacted with prototypes, providing invaluable insights into usability issues, pain points, and areas for improvement.

Feedback and iteration

Armed with user feedback, I iterated on the designs, incorporating suggested enhancements and refining the interface for optimal user experience. This iterative process involved continuous feedback loops, where I sought input from stakeholders, conducted additional user testing, and refined the designs until we achieved a solution that met user needs and expectations.

Deliver

Presentation & signoff

After thorough design and development, I presented the final solutions to senior engineers, including James Dyson, for sign-off. The presentation explained the evolution of the interface from initial concepts to the refined design, emphasizing how each decision was informed by user feedback and aligned with Dyson's commitment to innovation and user-centric design. James Dyson's approval underscored the success of my approach and provided validation for the direction of the project.

Handover

With sign-off secured, the project transitioned to the development teams for implementation. Detailed design specifications, prototypes, and comprehensive documentation ensured a smooth handover process. Throughout this phase, I maintained open communication channels, providing support and clarification as needed to ensure fidelity to the intended user experience.

🎉 The outcome of this project was monumental. The Dyson V11 set a new standard in the market as the first vacuum cleaner with an interactive screen, revolutionizing user experience.

 

🌟 Its success paved the way for subsequent models V12 and V15, which further impressed users with its ability to display precise dust collection metrics.

 

🎊 The intuitive interface contributed significantly to Dyson's reputation for innovation and excellence in floorcare technology.
